Going Ham for Gingham
Although I'm not typically one for patterns, there's something about the gingham trend for summer that I simply can't get enough of. From dresses and crop tops to bathing suits and skirts, gingham is slowly taking over my wardrobe.
ging·ham • /ˈɡiNGəm/ • noun
1. lightweight plain-woven cotton cloth, typically checked in white and a bold colour.
The lure of gingham first struck me after perusing the S/S '17 runways of Prada, Versace, Altuzarra, and more! There was something about the way this perennial print was mixed with contrasting materials on the runway that took it from the preppy/farmer look I once associated it with and injected a serious dose of fashion.
However, the ability to take this trend from the runway to the street is one that should not be underestimated. You see, the problem with gingham is that when done improperly, the outfit can quickly end up looking folky, or worse like you're wearing a picnic table. So to ensure I stay high-fashion in gingham, I follow these three simple tips:
- Opt for small-scale gingham patterns.
- Mix gingham pieces with a contrasting material like denim or leather.
- Accessorize with a luxe accessory or handbag.

Out of all the gingham pieces, I purchased this summer, this Gingham Off-The-Shoulder Top from Missguided is by far my favourite. Not only is it easy to wear, the bell sleeves add a whimsical touch that I'm truly digging. I recently paired this flirty top with an edgy mixed-material skirt and a pair of simple Open-Toe Mules from Aldo for a day of adventuring with my good friend and fellow blogger, Rae of theNotice! And you best believe I got a ton of compliments while wearing it!
